In preparation for new guidance on the latest ISO risk management standard the first global survey of the ISO 31000 – Risk Management Principle and Guidelines will take place this month to gather the views of risk practitioners on the internationally recognised set of recommendations and principles.

Members of over 70 risk management associations worldwide, including Ferma, have been invited to participate in the survey that will be conducted via a LinkedIn discussion group. It will take place from the 17 to the 31 October and be based on ten to fifteen closed questions.

The ISO 31004: Risk management – Guidance for the implementation of ISO 31000, which will accompany the 31000 standard, is planned for publication in 2013 and will in part be based on comments and findings from the survey.

A committee of volunteers with experience of using ISO 31000 will manage the new guide and related survey. A new ISO committee ISO/TC 262 has been created to prepare the 31004 and will be chaired by Kevin Knight.

Mr Knight also chaired the committee that designed the 31000 and his appointment hopes to ensure continuity with the standard. Mick Magher of the British Standards Institute is in charge of the Secretariat.

The survey aims to understand how risk professionals from all sectors worldwide perceive and use the 31000. It is also hoped that it will raise awareness of the existence and uses of the risk management standard and help risk management associations to inform their members of the advice on offer.

“This is the first time the global risk management community active across all fields, sectors, industries and services is being invited to participate in an international survey on ISO 31000. It is a great opportunity to share your thoughts and concerns about the ISO standard on risk management,” said Alex Dali, moderator of the LinkedIn ISO 31000 Risk Management Standard Group.

Published in 2009 the ISO 31000 provides principles and generic guidelines on risk management and is intended for use by any public, private or community enterprise, association, group or individual and as such is not specific to any industry or sector.

The standard can be applied to any type of risk, whether positive or negative, and provides guidelines on the design and implementation of risk management plans and frameworks within an organisation.

Risk professionals are encouraged to participate in the survey via their risk management association or the LinkedIn group. You can join the discussion forum at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?mostPopular=&gid=1834592
